Priscilla’s Interior Design Style Evolution
9.27.24
Picture this: A designer, yours truly, pondering the all too common question, "What's your favorite design style?" Sigh. If only it were that simple.
You see, fellow design enthusiast, my style is on this constant evolutionary journey, both personally and professionally. It’s like evolving a playlist - just when you think you’ve found the perfect tracklist, a new song comes along and changes the whole vibe. (Cue Natasha Bedingfield’s "Unwritten" playing softly in the background).
Sure, the core elements of my design aesthetic have stayed with me, but those finishing touches? Oh, they've been on quite the adventure over the years. And if this sounds familiar, buckle up, because we’re about to take a little trip down memory lane.
Let me paint you a picture of college-me: hair pouf, dark eyeliner, ballerina flats and a statement necklace, completely enamored with open floor plans. Cue eye roll. It was the trend, you know? Big, sprawling spaces. People were DIY-ing their homes, knocking down walls like there was no tomorrow. We thought we were revolutionizing social interaction - creating the ultimate clutter-free, communal living environments.
In theory, open spaces were the answer to everything: decluttered and perfect for gatherings. But in reality? Let me tell you, it often created vast rooms where no one knew what to do with all that empty space. And when things don’t have a designated place? Well, chaos has a way of expanding to fill every inch.
Oh, and let’s not forget about my love affair with contemporary and modern design styles. Picture me, starry-eyed over sleek lines, neutral palettes, and no-fuss decor. It’s what Gen Z now lovingly calls “millennial grey.” No shade, though - we all fell for it! And truth be told, there’s still plenty to admire. But between you and me? We’ve all learned that the early 2000s didn’t always do it justice.
As time went on, I had a bit of an epiphany. Each design style or trend that I fell for had elements that resonated with me. Take that open floor plan obsession - I wasn’t craving wide-open spaces, I was craving connection. I envisioned homes where families could gather, generations cooking holiday dinners together. It wasn’t just the design itself, it was the feeling behind it.
And that neutral palette I thought was so sophisticated? Well, I discovered that color, print, and texture can bring just as much elegance - if not more - when used thoughtfully.
I tried to log into my old Pinterest to show you what used to make my heart skip a beat back in 2010, but apparently, I went on a pin-purge and deleted everything pre-2022. Don’t worry, though, I found some examples on Google to jog my memory:
Can’t deny, I still love a good concrete accent!
But here’s the kicker - feast your eyes on what inspires me these days:
Quite the transformation, isn’t it? I never thought I’d embrace textures, prints, and even color like this, but I’m so glad I did. And I bet you are too.
You see, the beauty of design is that it’s always changing, always evolving. Like a fine wine, it only gets better with time. As the years go by, we find new ways to breathe life into old trends, new perspectives on those classic design principles.
Your design style is no different - it’s not about a specific piece or trend but the feeling you’re after, a sense of warmth, connection, and home. And that’s what makes this journey so exciting. Embrace the evolution, and as your style grows, the spaces around you will evolve to reflect who you are. Happy hunting!
